Katie’s Story

from then to now

Katie J. Liddiard was born in Northern Utah in 1984. From a young age she proved time and again her love for drawing and painting and knew that she wanted to be an artist when she grew up- envisioning her work on gallery and museum walls.

After graduating Viewmont High School in 2003, she attended Snow College in Ephraim, Utah. She had every intention of continuing on through the college system until she was exposed to some of the art academies around the world that taught traditional curriculum for developing artists. Katie was fascinated that she could learn how to draw and paint like the great masters of the past that she admired.

In 2006, Katie was off to Florence, Italy to study at the Florence Academy of Art (FAA). There she was adopted into a world she had dreamed of growing up, where every student had the same goal as she did- to be the best artist they could possibly be- and she knew that she had found her community. However, financial constraints prevented her from finishing her studies at the FAA, and she was forced to head back home to Utah. Fortunately, she connected with Ryan S. Brown who had opened the Masters Academy of Art in Provo, Utah in 2008.

Katie studied at the Masters Academy for five years, graduating in 2014. She then aided Ryan as the school’s Assistant Director until, in 2018, she left to focus on her work.

She now lives and works out of her home studio in Spanish Fork with her husband and two children.

philosophy

Flora and fauna have had a huge impact on Katie’s development as an artist and, as such, is a central theme throughout her work. She enjoys painting the fruits of the season and often goes foraging in her environment for her next subjects. She adores studying small, seemingly insignificant scenes alongside her larger, more composed pieces as she strives to search for the divine through the everyday, the transcendent in the ordinary.

Beauty is vanishing from our world because we live as though it did not matter.
— Roger Scruton, Beauty

Katie relishes moments of peace and quiet in her daily life which has extended to her paintings. Creating pleasing color and design harmonies from her subject is one of Katie’s favorite things to explore in her work. She is constantly referring to great masters such as Emile Friant, Henri Fantin-Latour, Jules Bastien-Lepage, Rembrandt van Rijn, Emil Carlsen, and many, many more for inspiration and guidance.
